A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Community Spirit in Uncertain Times

Headshot of Michelle Chimko

AS THE DAYS GROW SHORTER and winter settles in, I’m reminded that this season, more than any other, asks us to lean on one another. When roads are icy, we slow down and watch out for our neighbours. When the air turns cold, we find warmth in gathering together. And in moments of uncertainty and change, whether from economic turbulence or changes in the way we work, it’s in community that we find stability and a sense of calm.

A feeling of community and a sense of belonging are what we strive for at AMA. With more than a million members across Alberta, we are so much more than an association — we’re a community of friends, neighbours and family members who look out for one another. And in this issue, you’ll see how that spirit comes to life.

You’ll find stories that highlight the joys of connecting with family and friends, from the surprising power of pickleball (North America’s fastest-growing sport) to bring people together and the timeless fun of board games to the exhilaration of winter sports that welcome all ages and abilities. We’ve also highlighted a few of Alberta’s “Winning Winter Wonderlands” that are perfect for exploring with friends and family.

But community also means caring for one another in times of need. Our story on Alberta food banks shows how these vital organizations are evolving to meet growing demand as families across our province struggle to make ends meet. And just as food banks are adapting, our members are stepping up in inspiring ways, engaging with the AMA Community Foundation’s innovative programming, such as Harvesting Hope, where members grow produce to donate, to Fill Our Fleet, where members give time, money and food — all to support local food banks.

These efforts show that it doesn’t take grand gestures to strengthen community. Sometimes, it’s as simple as planting seeds, donating a few hours, or sharing what we have. We’ve seen this spirit embodied in members of all ages, including young people like Max — featured in our most recent This Is AMA video — who you will learn is making a difference right in his own neighbourhood.

As we enter our centennial year here at AMA, our role in the Alberta community has never been more important to us. Anxiety is running high in our world, whether it’s about the economy or the accelerating pace of technological change, both of which are impacting lives and livelihoods. If there was ever a time we needed community spirit, this is it.

Caring for each other, whether on the road, in our neighbourhoods, or across our province, is what makes AMA unique. It’s a membership built not only on services, but on connection. As we move into a new year, we hope you see your membership as more than a card in your wallet. It’s a shared commitment to being part of something bigger, and an investment in a community where we all look out for one another — in every season. AMA
