Drift

Edmonton

Most Edmontonians know of Drift’s food truck, Drifty. As of last summer, the beloved local food company found a permanent home with their new retail shop on 99 St. N.W. While you can’t grab one of their famous hot sandwiches there, Drift’s new grocery-focused venture lets devotees stock up on frozen versions of their fried chicken, soups and samosas, as well as their pickles and house-made condiments (notably their famous ají sauce, made with ají pepper, cilantro and mayo) year-round. And don’t worry — Drifty will still be making its usual stops around town from May to September.

Ice Bubbles

Abraham Lake

It feels like an alien landscape — all dramatic ice and snow, with strange underwater formations — but the Abraham Lake Ice Bubbles are entirely natural. Methane gas from decaying debris in the lake forms bubbles that are trapped as the water freezes. The frozen white orbs suspend in the ice in various configurations — and you can get right out on the ice to see them up close. Along the way from Calgary — about a 3.5-hour drive straight through — consider dropping in at these other fun stops. Just be conscious of time, as you’ll want to spend a few hours exploring the lake. It might be a good idea to stay overnight nearby. You could continue on to Lake Louise or double back to Red Deer — both are roughly a two-hour drive from Abraham Lake.
