Clever Scoops, Champion
The historic building that houses Clever Scoops has been a sweet spot for the southern Alberta village of Champion since 1912. Once the village office, this recently renovated space has become an ice cream shop and a popular gathering place since it opened during the pandemic. Take your pick from 24 flavours of ice cream and browse the extensive menu offering burgers, fries, pizza and wings, plus baked goodies. Cool enough to draw visitors from Calgary and Lethbridge, Clever Scoops has kept its local charm. The staff hosts family-friendly events such as a water-balloon fight and the annual 5K walk/run fundraiser.

Rowley Ghost Town
Drive back in time to this historical village only a two-hour drive northeast of Calgary. The deserted farming town, which once had a population of 500, still has its original buildings from the 1920s, including a general store, bank and even a funeral parlour — all thanks to the maintenance efforts of nine permanent residents. Stop by on the last Saturday of the month, when locals and tourists come together for guided tours, pizza and live music.
The village includes a garage, church, saloon and three grain elevators. | PHOTO: DAVID BUTLER/DREAMSTIME.COM
