A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
A Season to Look Out for One Another

Spring brings longer days, clearer roads and a renewed sense of energy across our communities. It’s also a time when driving patterns shift — traffic increases, speeds pick up and more pedestrians and cyclists return to our streets.
Advocacy has been at the heart of AMA since our earliest days. We were founded by Albertans who came together to look out for one another on the road. That commitment continues to guide our work today — from protecting children at crosswalks to advancing safer road policies across the province.
This spring, we are strengthening our focus on road safety. Recent research we conducted measuring “near misses” at intersections revealed concerning levels of risky driving behaviour. At the same time, traffic fatalities have been rising since 2023, with speed identified as a leading factor in many cases. These findings are shaping focused conversations with the government about how speed limits are set, how they are enforced and where improvements can be made.
We are also advancing new solutions to support Alberta schools. Educators are telling us that growing student populations, heavier traffic volumes and increased distraction — for both drivers and students — are creating new safety pressures. With 86 years of experience delivering the School Safety Patrol Program, we know this is an area where we can contribute meaningfully. To that end, we are expanding our School Safety program beyond the traditional crosswalk patrol model to provide schools with a broader suite of practical tools that reflect today’s realities.
Policy and programs matter — but progress also depends on collective action. Every crosswalk, intersection and school zone is shared space. The choices made in those spaces affect families, children and communities across Alberta. As members and as drivers, we each play a role in shaping the culture on our roads.
As we move into the spring season, we’re asking for your support in reinforcing this shared commitment. By staying attentive, managing speed and respecting the spaces where others are most vulnerable, we can help ensure that the work we are doing together translates into safer roads across the province.
Looking out for one another has always defined AMA. With your partnership, we will continue building safer communities — one intersection, one school zone, and one choice at a time. AMA
