Saddle Up for Serenity

At Centre Peak High Country Adventures, guests experience a healthy dose of the South Canadian Rockies.

By Dick Snyder

KATE MCKIM WANTS PEOPLE to experience and embrace her part of the world. In fact, she’s made it her business.

It helps that said business is nestled in Canada’s breathtaking Southern Rockies, roughly two-and-a-half hours south of Calgary. McKim’s dude ranch, Centre Peak High Country Adventures, offers a journey into the heart of a third-generation ranching lifestyle. Guests come to ride trails, stay overnight in authentic turn-of-the-century homesteads, and get as far out of the hustle and bustle of city living as possible. Here, at elevations exceeding 1,700 metres, the views go on and on to the distant horizon.  McKim’s grandparents bought the ranch in 1953 and established a Hereford cattle-breeding business. The ranch (run by her dad, 81, and mom, 74) boasts 2,500 acres, where 60 cows and calves graze. McKim’s operation, however, focuses on a personalized and immersive guest experience — no more than a small family or a couple at a time. “With everything I offer, it’s a one-on-one experience,” she explains. McKim is the guide, innkeeper, instructor and host. (Her sons Liam, 13, and Jase, 8, help out.) Rides range from one to four hours, and reveal stunning vistas and glimpses of big horn sheep, elk and occasionally grizzly bears. The lucky few may see a wolf.

There are two distinct lodging options: a heritage log cabin dating back to the early 1900s — off-grid and wonderfully rustic — and a stucco house with all the amenities. The log cabin, which has no running water, power or cell service, is surprisingly popular. “People love it … because they can just tap out of their busy life and … reality.” How much do guests like unplugging in the Rockies? They tell McKim that it’s like coming home. “I feel like I’m providing that reset button for a lot of people.” Because everything feels better on horseback.

What Songs Do You Road-Trip to, Devin Cooper?

ALBERTA'S DEVIN COOPER masterfully straddles country and rock. He draws from both genres, with a dash of blues, on the asphalt. “I want music that makes me feel something, whether it’s the kind that gets your head nodding and foot tapping, or the kind that makes you roll the windows down and disappear into the moment,” says Cooper. The musician raised $50,000 last year for the Alzheimer Society of Calgary through charity events and gigs, then split for Nashville to cut new tracks. “These songs that make the miles go by faster — gritty guitars, big choruses and lyrics that hit somewhere between freedom and nostalgia — that’s the good stuff.” –Kim Hughes
